Imagine that the genome 基因组 is a book. The book consists of 23 chapters with thousands of stories made up of paragraphs words and letters on different levels. There are one billion words in the book which makes it longer than 5 000 volumes the size of this book or as long as 800 Bibles. If I read the genome out to you at the rate of one word per second for eight hours a day it would take me a century. If I wrote out the human genome one letter per millimeter my text would be as long as the River Danube. This is an enormous document a huge volume a cook book of great length and it all fits inside the extremely small nucleus 核 of a tiny cell that fits easily upon the head of a pin.
The idea of the genome as a book is not strictly speaking even a metaphor 比喻. It is true to a great extent. A book is a piece of digital information written in one-directional form and defined by a code that translates a small alphabet of signs into a large dictionary of meanings through the order of their groupings. So is a genome. The only complication is that all English books read from left to right while some parts of the genome read from left to right and some from right to left though never both at the same time.
While English books are written in words of different lengths using twenty-six letters genomes are written entirely in three-letter words using only four letters. And instead of being written on flat pages they are written on long chains of DNA molecules 分子. The genome is a very clever book because in the right conditions it can both photocopy itself and read itself.
9.How do human genomes read according to the passage﹖
A. Only from left to right.
B.Only from right to left.
C.From both directions at the same time.
D.From one direction at a time.
10.We can learn from the passage that the human genome __________.
A.is as long as the River Danube
B.can be easily placed on the head of a pin
C.is coded with an alphabet of four letters
D.is smart enough to read and take photos of itself
11.It can be concluded that the passage is mainly written for __________.
A.specialists in the field
B.general readers
C.natural scientists
D.readers with academic background
12.The real purpose of the author's comparison of the genome to a book is _________.
A.to focus on the differences between the two
B.to lay emphasis on the similarities between the two
C.to simplify the concept of the human genome
D.to give an exact description of the human genome

Treasure hunts 寻宝 have excited people's imagination for hundreds of years both in real life and in books such as Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Kit Williams a modern writer had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues 线索 found in a book when he wrote a children's story Masquerade in 1979. The book was about a hare and a month before it came out Williams buried a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire. The book contained a large number of clues to help readers hind the hare but Williams put in a lot of ″red herrings″ or false clues to mislead them.
Ken Roberts the man who found the hare had been looking for it for nearly two years. Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time he found it by logic 逻辑 not by luck. His success came from the fact that he gained an important clue at the start. He had realized that the words″ One of Six to Eight″ under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon the first of Henry 's six wives. Even here however Williams had succeeded in misleading him. Ken knew that Kathrine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton in Cambridgeshire in 1536 and thought that Williams had buried the hare there. He had been digging there for over a year before a new idea occurred to him. He found out that Kit Williams had spend his childhood near Ampthill in Bedfordshire and thought that he must have buried the hare in a place he knew well but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon until one day he came across two stone crosses in Amjpthill Park and learnt that they had been built in her honor in 1773.
Even then his search had to come to end. It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he decided to write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there. Williams encouraged him to continue and on February 24th 1982 he found the treasure. It was worth £3000 in the beginning but the excitement it had caused since its burial made it much more valuable.
16.The underlined word ″them″ paragraph 1 refers to __________.
A.Red herrings B.treasure hunts
C.Henry VIII D.readers of Masquerade
17. What is the most important clue in the story to help Ken Roberts find the hare﹖
A.Two stone crosses in Ampthill.
B.Stevenson's Treasure Island.
C.Katherine of Aragon.
D.Williams' hometown.
18.The stone crosses in Ampthill were built ____.
A.to tell about what happened in 1773
B.to show respect for Henry VIII's first wife
C.to serve as a roadsign in Ampthill Park
D.to inform people where the gold hare was
19.Which of the following describes Roberts' logic in searching for the hare﹖
a.Henry VIII's six wives
b.Katherine's burial place at Kimbolton
c.Williams' childhood in Ampthill
d.Katherine of Aragon
e.stone crosses in Ampthill Park
A.abced B.dbcea C.adbce D.baecd
20.What is the subject discussed in the text﹖
A.An exciting historical event.
B.A modern treasure hunt.
C.The attraction of Masquerade.
D.The importance of logical thinking.
When the explorers landed on the moon they discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. They expressed their surprise to the ″moon people″ they met.
“月球人”提出的问题是“Why are you traveling to outer space when you don't even use your inner space﹖”所以it指代Using the earth's inner space。
Underground systems are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities such as Tokyo Seoul and Montreal there are large underground shopping areas. The ″Chunnel″ a tunnel connecting England and France is now complete.
Building down not up可以很好的表达了作者写这篇短文的目的:唤起人们向地下发展的注意。
Indeed as a result of new advances in physics and their rapid application to inventions designed to satisfy man's wants the world itself has been changing rapidly.
Teachers in thousands of schoolrooms in America are trying to communicate some of the excitement and importance of these new developments to their students.
They knew that some of their eager students will someday be scientists and will themselves then contribute to the development of new knowledge or its application to new things.中宾语从句的主语是some of their eager students 由此可以得出答案。
The only complication is that all English books read from left to right while some parts of the genome read from left to right and some from right to left though never both at the same time.
While English books are written in words of different lengths using twenty-six letters genomes are written entirely in three-letter words using only four letters.
But in fact we simply could not continue if it wasn't for a very special kind of gift people like you leave to us in their will.
But in fact we simply could not continue if it wasn't for a very special kind of gift people like you leave to us in their will可知。
CSIA for pets in need of pets可判断出,CSIA一定是宠物医院。
The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare but Williams put in a lot of ″red herrings″ or false clues to mislead them可以判断出them所指的是readers of Masquerade。
His success came from the fact that he gained an important clue at the start. He had realized that the words ″One of Six to Eight″ under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon the first of Henry VIII's six wives.
18.B 第二段最后一句话one day he came across two stone crosses in Ampthill Park and learnt that they had been built in her Katherine of Aragon the first of Henry VIII's six wives in honor in 1733告诉了我们答案。in one's honor的意思是“为了纪念或表示敬意而举行的某种活动”,与show respect for同义。
19.C 通读全文可以看出,找到野兔的逻辑思维的正确顺序是:Henry VIII's six wives -- Katherine of Aragon ------Katherine's burial place at Kimbolton ------- Williams's childhood in Ampthill ------- stone crosses in Ampthill Park。
We met at the school gate and went there together early in the morning.
Early in the morning we met at the school gate and went there together.
The young man could not help crying when he heard the bad news.
On hearing the bad news the young man could not help crying.
My parents praised Ah Fu warmly. It had saved my little sister bravely.
My parents praised Ah Fu warmly. It was our brave Ah Fu who had saved my little sister bravely.
We had to stand there to catch the offender.
What we had to do was to stand theretrying to catch the offender.
What China has achieved in recent years is known through the world.
My hometown is no longer what it used to be.
He sat in a chair with a newspaper in the hand.
Satisfied with the result,he decided to go on with a new experiment.
Only in this way can we achieve our goal.
Never before have I seen such a wonderful film.
If so,victory will be ours.
You can make some changes wherever necessary.
Failure is not a crime, but failure to learn from failure is.
When I play, I feel excited, and after it I feel relaxed.
He stopped us half an hour ago. He made us catch the next offender.
He stopped us half an hour ago and made us catch the next offender.
We had a short rest. Then we began to play happily. We sang and danced. Some told stories. Some played chess.
After a short rest,we had great fun singing and dancing, telling jokes and playing chess.
②转折 however 然而, but 但是, on the contrary相反, after all 毕竟等。
③总结 finally 最后, at last 最后, in brief 总之, in conclusion 最后等。
⑤对比 in the same way 同样地, just as 正如, on the one hand…on the other hand一方面……
A new railway is being built in my hometown.
A new railway is under construction in my hometown.
Thank you for sharing the time with us.
The way he views the world is very practical.
I like reading while my brother likes watching television.
I like reading while my brother enjoys watching television.

I have recently made a survey among 30 boys and 30 girls in my class about their purposes of getting on the internet. The girl's favorite is chatting but few boys like it. What the boys like to do most is playing games and girls also like it. Both boys and girls like to read news or send e-mails on the internet. Maybe they think it is the most convenient way to get information or keep in touch with friends. As for studying the numbers of boys and girls are equal but altogether only several of them will use internet as a tool to study.
Yours Sincerely
